New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - Decreases in the trend estimate continue to be recorded for total sales of new motor vehicles. The April 2009 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (70 572) was 1.4% lower than the corresponding estimate for March 2009 and 20.6% lower than the trend estimate in April 2008.
• Seasonally adjusted - The April 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (70 814) increased by 0.9% compared with March 2009.

• Trend - In April 2009 the trend estimate for other vehicle sales decreased by 2.2% when compared with March 2009, passenger vehicle sales decreased by 1.6%, while sales of sports utility vehicles remained stable. Compared with 12 months earlier, sales of total vehicles were 20.6% lower in April 2009. Sales of other vehicles decreased by 22.4%, sports utility vehicles by 20.4% and passenger vehicles by 20.0% when compared with the April 2008 level.
• Seasonally adjusted - On a seasonally adjusted basis, April 2009 sales of other vehicles decreased by 3.5% when compared with March 2009. During the same period sports utility vehicles increased by 3.4% and passenger vehicles by 1.8%.

• Trend - All states and territories contributed to the decrease in trend estimates when comparing April 2009 with March 2009. The Northern Territory showed the highest decrease with 3.0% followed by South Australia with 1.8% and Victoria with 1.7%. Tasmania had the lowest decrease of 0.1%.
• Seasonally adjusted - New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory all recorded seasonally adjusted sales in April 2009 above those in March 2009. Northern Territory had the highest increase of 13.9% while the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Queensland increased by 7.7%, 2.5% and 2.3% respectively, during this period. Of the remaining states and territories, Tasmania recorded the highest decrease of 5.4% for the same period, followed by South Australia with 2.1%, Victoria 1.1% and Western Australia 0.2%.
